Color + Design Blog

This sweet site takes things and boils them down to their color schemes which are downloadable in diff file formats. Cool inspiration, methinks. Imagine giving a preso, "And I was inspired to use these colors by a female parrot fish" [link]

ironic.

Made in the Uk by chrisparry. A signet ring with your fingerprint on it. This one made me smirk. Quite the concept of taking sometihng so personal and unique into a piece of jewelry- ergh signet ring. So literal. Yet has some sense to it. What if, instead of signatures we just used our thumbprints? it'd be much harder to reproduce- but everyone would need better eyes. to identify it i guess. kinda like one of the winners of the global ID card competition.

bottle prototyping

Thought I'd share a project I'm working on. Open to any comments and suggestions! Above are a few photos from the process I used to make a bottle.

I'm currently working on a project (theme: capturing and sharing moments) for school and needed to make a rough sketch model. My project is called message in a bottle, thus my design is bottle shaped. I was going to use a lathe and foam to make models but ran into the problem of the school's woodshop being closed due to the holiday on monday. To solve this problem, I used cardboard and laser cut each cross section and glued them together to make the form of the bottle.

Starting with 2007, Threadless will begin hosting the annual Threadless Awards! While an official date is TBA (soon though!), the winners of the 2007 Threadless Awards will probably be announced in January or February of 2008.

Each person who wins a Threadless Award will receive a "Bestee", an incredible trophy shaped like Bestee the Elephant giving her STAMP of approval (inspired by this)! There will be 10-20 Bestee categories like "Most Groundbreaking Design" to "Best Gallery Photo" to "Most Dedicated Blogger". Actual categories are still in the works and we'll announce them within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

Oh, we almost forgot the best part...

$100,000 in cash will be
awarded for the 2007 Bestees!

eve of halloween post

Cockeyed is the website of Rob Cockerham the man behind the above two costumes and a website full of fun filled answers. He's posted the process and results to many experiements:

-How much gold is in Goldschlager
-Can collecting cans in a shopping really generate a substantial income?
-Are spring shoes really possible and do they help you jump higher?
-and also the pranks section: slipping in fatty photoshop menus into TGI fridays(to replace vegetarian ones) (it has a photo of a stick of butter wrapped in bacon, lol)

enjoy!

kenny wong: illustrator

kenny wong is an illustrator dude- but he has a really rad website and some awesome work. Okay, so its a little dizzying at first, but the whole branding of the website is so clean, and awesome, and just amazing. Check out molly's house, his workspace, and read through the copperhead-18 story.(which I thouroughly enjoyed, tho long) Yeah. something nifty to look at.

hello

this is brian and im new here so just thought i'd say hello, after intruding upon this humble design blog thanks to kristina's invite. mm i guess just a little about me...

my name is brian and i just graduated from ccsf with a degree in graphic design. right after getting done with school i ended up in japan for 2 months during the summer and then europe for 3 weeks with The Kristina. so now im poor and unemployed (arent we all?) and putting together a redesign of my website and getting a printed portfolio out and all that good crap. i love ling ling potstickers, play the drums and guitar for my church, dumpster dive for treasure, was raised on videogames like zelda and rtype, am an advanced metal artist, draws quirky creatures on my arms in tattoo form, reads bringhurst before going to bed (any type lovers here?), went to the maker faire...

latte art, the new scene, brooklyn west

Good ol Oaktown has been getting some much-needed buzz as of late. Here is a link to the latest article in San Francisco magazine hyping our fair town as 'the next scene' and giving some ink to the monthly Art Murmur and bubbling-up uptown/downtown art and design scenes.

Anyone who lives here has been watching this happening for a while now. It's refreshing to see businesses other than nail salons and vacuum repair shops giving our fair city real urban life.

One place I've been keeping track of lately is the Awaken Cafe, soon to open in the now-closed (and sadly lamented) Golden Bull at 414 14th street in downtown. They are doing a total green re-model of the space, and promising to bring latte art to Oakland's caffeine addicts.

Also of note is the recently opened FiveTen Studio, run by local designer/entrepreneur Alfonso Dominguez who has his hands in some of the best new restaurants and design shops sprouting up around Old Oakland. He's making a concerted effort to showcase local up-and-coming talent. Designers, take note!

yamaha tesseract concept

This is the newest concept to come out of Yamaha's motorcycle division for the Tokyo Motor Show. It's a mix between motorcycle and scooter, similar to Piaggio's MP3 scooter. Yamaha says it's a little wider than a motorcycle and still leans into corners. The engine is a hybrid between V-Twin engine and electric motor.

As for the styling? It's, uh... different! Imagine a Transformer half transformed and you'll be pretty darn close. [autoblog.com]

¡very important!

things you should know:

1. Car drawing tutorial

2. IDSA openings & parties for this week!

3. Rock Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland hosts free or cheap classes, and has "lab time" for access to screen printing studio and industrial sewing machines for way cheap. Check it out. I made a T-shirt last week!

it's bout time!

Its half past eleven, and I just got home from the post office. There was one clerk who didn't have a calculator - the man customer was arguing that 15 stamps was $5.50, and she couldn't work it out right on paper. Finally, she was like, "oh...your right.." and he turned around to us(the audience) and said, "When I was in fifth grade. I got in trouble for not showing work. It cuz i use my head. It's all in here!" (pointing to his noggin)

Besides spending my morning watching other's antics, this time piece struck my fancy. Since visiting the land of swatch watches, I've been enamoured by time-keepers. This clock is called "About time"(hat tip to slipperybrick), by Dutch design studio Buro Vormkrijgers and it rolls conically one full revolution in the span of 12 hours. The edge of the circle touching the surface tells the time, well kinda.

The continuous strand of words say, "It's about seven o'clock," or "just nearly eight", so you never know exactly know what time it is.

an etsy find

I surf etsy on occasion to get a lil inspiration and see what other DIY'ers are up to (and trying to make a penny on) I thought this Laptop wallet by workingclassheros was quite a slick find. At first glimpse I was like, "Are you serious? You stick your arm through...?" It looks well made and the leather gives it some class, above other "camp-crafty" etsy products. I really like the contrast of the leather and felt materials, even if I'd prefer wool. It reminds me of a woolen pea coat with lether bits to hold down the ends of the cords for the toggles up the front. Ah, a wintery laptop cozy, that is made for walking down the hall clutched in one arm! (finally!) I have never dropped my ibook, but this cozy gives some reassurance.

ciao!

Environmental impacts of water[bottled]

"And in Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the U.S. market today, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have safe, reliable drinking water."

Okay, so we've all heard that water makes up what and what percentage of the earth, and our bodies. So its definitely important, right? But even though I'm one of the few who constantly only drinks water(among my friends) does anyone realizes that we pay more for bottled water than gas?

In the article: Message in a bottle by Charles Fishman, he tells recounts american culture of how mental we are to "indulge" in bottled water- and what bottled water really is- not to mention the facets of society that it impacts{ packaging, landfill, villages around the world...}

So if you've got a few minutes, read this thru.

a philosophical drop-in

Just found this interesting bit on the core site and wanted to share it with you all. I've been thinking a lot lately about the need for space and quiet in our lives and this seemed to touch on those issues. Do they apply to the life of a designer? Actually, this recent tangential thought was prompted by watching Miazaki's 'My Neighbor Totoro' which, unlike so many US/Disney animated movies allowed for quiet and space in-between action and dialogue.

weekly design prompt?

Hey guys I was wondering what you thought about having a weekly design prompt. Each week someone posts a topic and then during that week people post their sketches/ideas for that topic. This way we can look at each other's stuff, give crits, etc.

cool gadget. . . but can it be real?

Recently I've come up on scads of time to see movies one of them including "The Illusionist". Besides the love story and magic acts . .. what intrigued me the most was the locket. The illusionist crafts this locket that twists and turns and opens to reveal his photo- a secret!!! {see clip}

The mechanical philosopher has a set of cad renderings showing how it could be made, (which are much more clear than the engineery youtube animation) but it seems extremely intricate. inspiring anyhow.

CCA at ICFF!

Hey folks, I'm Tony Meredith...I'll be a senior in the ID program at CCA next year. In March of this year, I was asked to take part in the design, organization, fabrication, shipping, assembling, manning, and de-installation of CCA's booth at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. At first, Seth Murray was asked to be the co-worker on the booth...But it soon became clear that with him finishing up his thesis project and because of some other scheduling issues, he wouldn't be able to help out...rats! After a while, the school rustled up some help in the form of Gabe Lam, another senior-to-be. With that decision, we got to work...

The items shown in the booth were the pet products designed by CCA students in 2006 for Gaia & Gino...a Turkish household goods manufacturer. The pieces shown were: Chew by Jenny Olson, Wild Bowls by Brandon Warren, Twins Bowls by Richie Tanaka, and a prototype Bone Container by Matthew Gale. The furniture for the booth stemmed from a design that I did for a DWR sponsored furniture class in Fall 2006...the SlashBackslash Chair...we also produced a table to match the chairs...FIERCE!

I'd hate to bore everyone with in-depth details about the long process of the design and construction of the booth (you can look at my website http://www.tonymeredith.com for that...I'm working on that page right now...stay tuned!), I'd rather just share the pixes and call it a day! Enjoy!

Feisty Elle checking in

Hi there, I'm Leslie, owner of Feisty Elle and a fiber artist residing in San Francisco. Tirsh and Kristina met me at Maker Faire, where I was selling my feisty women's accessories at Bazaar Bizarre, a craft show housed within the faire showcasing lots of great artists and indie businesses selling handmade wares.

They've invited me to start blogging here and I'm stoked to share with you future shows in the Bay Area and my experiences as a one-woman indie, handmade women's accessories business. (If you'd like me to talk about any other topics of interest, let me know.)

That said, I've been in business since September 2005, but it feels like only now am I close to getting the hang of making things, selling things, and promoting what I make and sell. Since it's just me, I'm the only one I can point the finger at if nothing gets done or changes. In that sense, it's exciting, lonely, frustrating, and rewarding. To manage the ups and downs of running a small business, I keep myself connected to communities that do what I do and support one another in our crafty business endeavors.

One such community is The Switchboards. Their tagline is, "Connecting Creative Women in Business," (yes, you can be a guy and ask questions too, we're friendly ladies), and they do just that. The Switchboards is an active forum where you can ask questions, vent, and share experiences around the creative and business aspects of running your own business. Check it out!

Also, I'm a proud member of the San Francisco Craft Mafia (SFCM), a collective committed to promoting and supporting indie with a specific focus on handmade work. SFCM which is currently comprised of eight fabulous businesses and their owners. We meeting monthly to work on promoting both our own businesses as well as SFCM. We figure if we pool our resources, skills, talents, thinking, and time, we can do more together for our businesses than we can by ourselves. Speaking of which, we put on a great show last fall at Craft Gym (also a member), so look out for more events from us.

And that pretty much concludes my introductions. Thanks for reading!

computer science made cool

Tirsh and I met
Leah Buchley at the Maker faire in San Mateo- we were wandering around and saw this girl with an LED shirt! She made it herself, the LEDs were 'wired" with sewn conductive thread(which looks like thick greyish thread) which was party handsewn and party machine sewn, and She had controls on the side with the battery pack. It was totally rad, and my mom ended up picking up a kit to make a small LED "soft circuit" patch. (which is a current struggle to get to work)

A video of it being programed and demo of the shirt
here. The math handbag shown below was cut by a laser cutter from a file generated by a graphing calculator. She is a phd student at the U of colorado, and on her website she says,

"I am interested in integrating "feminine" activities like sewing with computer science, mathematics and technology. I think that social issues more often than lack of talent discourage women from entering math, technology and science related fields, and I hope to help create environments where women's interests are explored and represented."

When I was in highschool, we would program our TI-83s to graph hearts, but I think Leah's designs are way cooler.

BabySays: Baby Cry Translator, Monitor, Routine Tracker

BabySays

New parents are often frustrated to find themselves clueless on why their baby is crying. Moms are told that they would know with their instinct, which makes them feel like a failing mom when they couldn't figure out the messege from their baby. Dads, who don't spend as much time as moms in most cases, are even more embarrassed. Grandparents don't remember those days when they were new parents.
BabySays will translate the baby's cry for you. You will see the text messege on your bracelet monitor. Plus, you can track the feeding/sleeping/diapering routine for your baby simply pressing the buttons on the pillow. The data will be automatically updated onto your computer to visualize your baby's pattern.

Convertible Pot

Remember stirring the soup with one hand and holding the pot lid in the other hand with the pot turning with your laddle last night?
Remember the hot lid was dangling on the countertop upside down and hard to pick up?

No more hassle with this convertible pot.
The lid will stay open on the pot for you to add ingredients, stir, taste, season, etc... Convertible pot will make whole cooking process easier, safer, and less messy.
